Sanjaya Malakar - The Voting Mystery

While many theories have been put out there about how, exactly, Sanjaya Malakar manages to escape eviction on “American Idol” every week, the audience reaction this week only made the mystery deepen.At elimination time, there were huge cheers when Ryan called the names of crowd-pleasers like Melinda and Blake. But when he asked Sanjaya to stand — three separate times, in a gag that was either brilliant or annoying, depending on where you stand on the Seacrest scale — there was nary a peep from the audience.

Not only did he debut a new look — curly hair and the thinnest moustache and goatee imaginable, but he also took the Latin week spiced with J Lo for the week seriously by singing in Spanish.

Sanjaya Malakar also got very lucky this season because of the website Votefortheworst.com. In 2004 “Vote for the Worst” was created by a fan of “American Idol”. Each season since then, the web site has selected an Idol contestant for people to rally behind. Of course, the selection is based on which contestant is the worst. While the site had been popular, it was never much of a factor on the outcome of the show.

On his March 13th show, Howard Stern mentioned the “Vote for the Worst” website when discussing “American Idol” with one of his regular callers, Eric the Actor/Idol Expert. Eric was discussing his favorites this season and Stern joked about voting for Sanjaya just to upset Eric.

A week later, a number of Stern listeners called in to announce that they had voted 75 or more times for Sanjaya. It was at that point that Stern officially began campaigning for listeners to vote for Sanjaya. Stern did not take credit for this idea and has continually mentioned the “Vote for the Worst” website.

Since then, the movement has grown and the media has picked up on the story. Also, Sanjaya has not been in the bottom three contestants since this time and other contestants, who some people feel are superior to Sanjaya, have been eliminated from the show.

Now people are upset that Howard Stern is ruining “American Idol”. Make sure to call for your favourite idol !
